The Almshouse Practice has always been a busy town centre practice starting with a just few hundred patients to recently registering its 13,000th patient!
The Almshouse practice came into being in 1968 when two practices, previously operating out of houses, joined together to move into their first purpose-built surgery on Almshouse Lane. The doctors involved at this stage were Dr’s Gibson, Lyle and Shaw. A further move into new premises, still on Almshouse Lane, took place in 1983 as a result of the development of The Ridings Shopping Centre.
In 1992 the GP’s opened a Branch Surgery located near ASDA at Durkar. The surgery was on the Sandal Castle Business Complex and became Sandal Castle Medical Centre.
In June 1998 the practice relocated Almshouse Surgery into Trinity Medical Centre.
This purpose built medical centre is owned by Primary Health Properties and leased by the GP’s.
We are a group practice so all our clinicians work across both sites and they all have access to the same patients records and information meaning patients can chose between both sites as well as a range of familiar faces for consultations.
The practice recently became and Accredited Training Practice with Leeds University and with our 2 accredited GP’s we can have up to 2 GP Registrars and 2 FY2 Trainee GP’s at any time as well as numerous medical students.
The practice currently has its largest staffing levels to date with over 30 members of staff;
