"Putting patients interests at the heart of what we do"

Patient Reference Group

Patient participation is a unique partnership between patients, GPs and their practice which is essential to and results in high quality and responsive care.

Patient Participation Groups (PPGs) and Patient Reference Groups (PRGs) work in partnership with their practices to:

  • help patients to take more responsibility for their health.
  • contribute to the continuous improvement of services and quality of care.
  • foster improved communication between the practice and its patients.
  • provide practical support for the practice and help to implement change.

Any of our patients can join our Patient Reference Group. As a member you can either attend groups or you can receive communications via email or post.  Our members range from 20—90 years old. You can even join the group if you are not registered with the practice but are a carer for someone who is. The group meets with Dr. Power, the practice senior partner, the Practice Manager and other practice representatives.

Our Patient Reference Group consists of 2 types of members; Group Members attend meetings and discuss the issues that are currently relevant to our patients and the practice. Virtual Members who cannot attend the meetings are able to send their issues to the practice and they will be raised for discussion at the meetings. All members will receive feedback from the meetings and updates from the practice.

Our Group members meet at the Almshouse Surgery in our large conference room. We have hot & cold drink facilities and the room is accessible for wheelchairs.

If you become a virtual member you will receive all the information via email or post so there is no need to even leave your home.

The group meets approximately every 9 weeks. We also send out information in between meetings to ensure our group is kept up to date. We currently meet on a Wednesday afternoon but we are always open to rotating the group times if necessary to accommodate more members.

Our PRG So Far…..

Our Patient Reference Group has been established for many years now and has helped shape the surgery into the user friendly practice that it is today. Our most recent accomplishments are;

  • Getting the surgery re-decorated
  • Improving practice communications
  • Updating notice boards & screens
  • Increasing uptake in the practice survey
  • Blood pressure machine in the waiting room

The group meet regularly with practice staff and a GP to discuss any matters arising and any feedback received from patients. This gives the practice an insight into areas they need to improve and also helps the PRG understand the difficulties the practice may have in certain areas and assist in finding solutions for common problems patients may experience.
